The era of guest workers is long gone, but the lives of guest workers remain largely overlooked. The children and grandchildren of the “first generation” bring their parents’ and grandparents’ stories to life through storytelling, thereby giving a voice to a generation that has fallen into oblivion.
At the same time, they process their own life stories through their writing. The narratives are accompanied by image projections from the family album and stage design.
At a time when ethnic and religious backgrounds are playing an increasingly significant role in public debates, it seems all the more important to focus on the concrete realities of life for people with migration experiences, in order to render common rhetoric about “foreign infiltration” meaningless.
The stories told are intended to contribute to the culture of remembrance in Germany and thereby strengthen immigrants’ sense of identity within German society.
