Pergolesi, Passion Concerto for Two Voices and Chamber Orchestra
"Stabat Mater Dolorosa" – Mary stood beneath the cross – Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's work of the same name takes up this medieval hymn and unfolds it in a simple, yet powerful musical language.
In the tradition of Passiontide devotions, the music considers the suffering of Christ from the perspective of his mother. Lament and compassion, pain and hope stand side by side. Pergolesi's setting remains restrained and clear – music that carries and deepens the word.
The Stabat Mater has been part of the Church's Passiontide piety for centuries. It invites us to accompany the time before Easter with listening and prayer.
