For one evening, the Art Library’s collection of ornamental engravings presents a selection from the vast array of traditional ornaments in European art history: volutes and cartouches, grotesques and arabesques, scrollwork, teigwerk, and rocaille, interlacing, and floral motifs.

The focus is on networks and rediscovery, on dissemination and adaptations. Over the centuries, these impressively diverse ornamental designs served as models, sources of inspiration, and means of further development and distinction.

For art history, the history of ornamentation offers a way to date numerous objects of decorative arts.
