gamut inc presents a hypnotic evening featuring a computer-controlled acoustic organ and light. Their new modular organ, BLACK SQUARE, takes center stage at the 7th edition of the PYTHO series.
By individually adjusting the air pressure of each pipe on this unique instrument, entirely new sounds and even resynthesis processes are created. Hovering between harmony and noise, the pieces generate a euphorically intoxicating vortex of overlapping, accelerating textures and harmonies. With the experimental music series PYTHO, the ensemble gamut inc has been exploring new music theater and concert formats at the Theater im Delphi since 2021.
BLACK SQUARE is a computer-controlled, wind-dynamic modular organ consisting of two identical square modules, each with 64 pipes. What distinguishes BLACK SQUARE from a conventional organ is that the wind pressure of each individual pipe can be adjusted in milliseconds. Whereas classical organ pipes can only be turned on or off, BLACK SQUARE allows for precise, gradual control—thus opening the door to microtonality and subtle nuances of intonation.
