Around 1600, the world of music underwent a fundamental transformation—opera was born. Composers such as Peri, Caccini, and above all Monteverdi brought dramas of human existence to the stage, cloaked in mythological themes.
This development had already begun to take shape in the 15th century with intermezzos and improvised poetic singing, but it was the emergence of the opera orchestra that marked the beginning of this era in music history.
Art historian Lutz Stöppler and musician Gaby Bultmann will guide you on a journey through the world of early opera.
