"The family is the smallest cell of society", they said not only in the GDR. But what does this mean today? Who is included in the notion of family? Perhaps this question is more valid in Berlin, the capital city of singles, than anywhere else.

In Axel Ranisch’s latest comedy, written for Berliner Ensemble with his husband Paul Zacher, many different fortunes, people, generations and family constellations end up in the office of housing administrator Braunert in Berlin-Lichtenberg.

After all, everybody needs to live somewhere, no matter with whom or how many.
A young couple is finally looking for their first flat together, but they have to let Mum live with them – and if there is one mother, the other one must surely follow. And the dog. And Gran… In no time at all, there’s a whole lot of people and they all have their own notions of the world, of love and happiness.
There is only one thing they can all agree on: Music makes everything easier to bear. And when Gran, who suffers from dementia, loses her bearings and thinks that this is the 1980s, the song will just have to be one from the final hours of the GDR.

AXEL RANISCH was born in East Berlin in 1983. He graduated from the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF with the film Dicke Mädchen (2011), which received several awards. Short films and television productions followed as well as his films Ich fühl mich Disko (2013) and Alki Alki (2015). Since 2013, he has been directing operas at various opera houses including Bayerische Staatsoper, Komische Oper Berlin and Opéra National de Lyon. He published his first novel Nackt über Berlin in 2018. Axel Ranisch and author PAUL ZACHER are close creative partners; most recently, they created the multipart audio play Anton und Pepe (2021).
