Meinolf Udo Saggel Quartett

With vocal numbers from the swing era, the audience is invited to listen to the more complex improvisations of these four master musicians.

Meinolf Udo Saggel, played as a percussionist in bands in his hometown of Hamm (Westphalia) from childhood. There, he initially took drum lessons from his older brother, Heiner Saggel. Saggel has been active as a professional drummer on the Berlin jazz scene since 1989. He has continually furthered his education, including studying Brazilian rhythms in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. At the ‘Forum of Brazilian Artists in Berlin’, he won first prize with the trio Planetao. He was also honoured at the Jazz and Blues Award Berlin with the Brazil-Jazz Band Pantao.

Carolyn del Rosario, originally from the Philippines, has lived in Berlin since 1983 and is an active member of various ensembles in the Berlin jazz scene. Carolyn is an expressive yet lyrical pianist. The sounds of her piano playing are characterised by swing, Latin bebop, blues and funk.

Max Hartmann, born in Berlin, comes from a musical family and has been playing the double bass since the age of 13. He has performed in many different ensembles ranging from jazz and Latin to rock, including the bands Swingbop’ers and Time Rag Dept., alongside jazz guitarist Janko Lauenberger, flamenco guitarist Abel Sanchez, and samba artists Jabuti Gilberto Fonteles and Valdir Vieira dos Santos.

Oliver Fox was born in East Berlin and completed his jazz studies in saxophone, clarinet and flute in Mainz (Germany) and Graz (Austria) with a Z.I.R.P. scholarship. To broaden his musical horizons, he travelled through India, worked as a performer and composer in Shanghai, China, and conducted numerous workshops.
