Jazz at the Alten Feuerwache (Old Fire Station)
Extraordinary times give rise to extraordinary music. They shake up the music scene. They point the way to new horizons. So now is the time to reorient oneself and try different paths, to let new sounds reach our ears.
Berlin-based musician Martina Gebhardt offers these new sounds with her band. For years she has been persistently composing, arranging and producing her authentic music – her sixth album, ‘Clear, Out Of The Blue’, has just been released on Laika Records.
And with it, the third in the series conceived by Martina, ‘Good vibes with good friends’, the third CD featuring almost exclusively her own compositions. This time, there is a great deal of love at play, reflecting on the last three years. After all, life is so often about approaching this life with love and strengthening one’s own purpose within it.
Originally a jazz singer by profession, her love for music of all kinds was instilled in her from birth. And so one hears danceable songs from her, sometimes straightforward, sometimes playful, sometimes tender, sometimes with a hard edge. With a fascinatingly versatile voice, she sings enchantingly, mostly in German or English. Or she scats, using syllables of her own invention. Or, drawing on years of experience and great inner richness, she improvises – as, incidentally, does every one of the band’s virtuoso instrumentalists, who play with wholehearted passion and wonderful talent and have been accompanying Martina sensitively for years (Tilman Person on percussion). Who feel at home working with the singer on several projects (Martin Lillich on double bass). Or who have joined the band relatively recently – out of the blue, so to speak – and, with their deep musical understanding and immense ability to pick things up quickly, hit exactly the right musical notes (Carly Quiroz on piano).
There will be plenty to hear from the new CD at the concert, and of course some tracks from Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of ‘good vibes with good friends’.
