Organised by Eleni Poulou

A collage program consisting of selected slow movements from Telemann’s Fantasies for Solo Violin and original compositions by Voutchkova, the New Ghost Phantasies.

The compositions New Fantasies for Two Violins were commissioned by the DARA String Festival 2024 and premiered there by Biliana Voutchkova and Clara Levy. They are inspired by Georg Philipp Telemann’s Fantasies for Solo Violin and feature music that is partly composed and partly improvised, developed from a selection of slow movements from the original Fantasies.

The creative process for this work involved a research phase of mutual personal observation as well as the joint development of an understanding of their shared classical music background. It traced their early classical training and the changes and developments that both have undergone over the years, leading to their current artistic identities. The New Fantasies emerged from their personal connection to Telemann’s Fantasies, which both have been playing for over 20 years.

For this concert, Biliana Voutchkova developed a new version of the work, New Ghost Phantasies for solo violin and fixed media. She revisits the material from New Fantasies and transforms it by translating the shared dialogue into a solo constellation featuring ghostly, pre-recorded layers and spectral presences.
