As part of Open Monument Day 2026
The international travelling exhibition “Forced to Work – Willing to Survive” was developed as a joint Erasmus+ project by partners from Italy, Austria and Poland. It sheds light on the mass phenomenon of Nazi forced labour through personal biographies: the stories of civilian workers, prisoners of war, concentration camp inmates and persecuted Jews from across Europe are brought to life here.
The exhibition compares the different historical contexts in occupied Poland, in ‘annexed’ Austria and in Italy, which remained an ally until 1943.
A concluding section draws a parallel with the present day: despite international agreements, millions of people worldwide are still affected by modern-day exploitation. The exhibition thus illustrates what forced labour means – then as now.
