Set in Oaxaca, the film offers a poetic glimpse into the world of the Muxes—a centuries-old gender identity among the Zapotec people of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, whose existence challenges and expands traditional notions of gender and identity.
With a narrative style that blends magical realism with social commentary, “Finlandia” portrays the experiences, challenges, and hopes of a community struggling for recognition of its identity in a society shaped by patriarchal structures and normative expectations.
Against the backdrop of an earthquake that serves as a catalyst for emotions, conflicts, and personal transformation, the human and cultural richness of a tradition deeply rooted in southern Mexico unfolds.
The film will be shown in its original version in Spanish and Diidxazá (Zapotec) with English subtitles.
