Despite her short life, Lili Boulanger created a significant body of work at the cusp of Romanticism and Modernism. Her Psalm 130, Du fond de l’abîme (1917), is a profoundly personal invocation poignantly oscillating between premonitions of death, the suffering of war, and the hope for peace—a work that has only recently begun to receive the attention it deserves.

Gabriel Fauré's Requiem (1888/1900) also stands at the transition to Modernism, eschewing dramatic visions of the afterlife and portraying death as a quiet journey to paradise—characterized by gentle melodies and luminous harmonies that continue to resonate today.
