IKONE DER MODRENE

The Hufeisensiedlung designed 1925-30by Bruno Taut, Martin Wagner and garden architect Leberecht Migge is a key piece of emerging modernism. It was built by the GEHAG housing association in a time of severe housing shortage and established new standards in urban planning. Its charming mix of colorful row houses and modernist apartment blocks bridges the gap between garden city movement and large-scaled residential developments based on serial row construction.

The virtuosly varied, listed ensemble of almost 2000 housing units was privatized 1998 which made homegenous heritage preservation much more complicated. Ten years later it was designated as a part of  UNESCO World Heritage Site "Berlin Modernism Housing Estates". This gave birth to our various projects in which the guide was largely involved. These projects will be subject of the tour and might also serve as a model for other developments.

The tour starts at 5 p.m. at the subway station "Blaschkoallee" (U7), exit Fritz-Reuter-Allee.
