German fairy tales form the canon of storytelling with their blend of tender romance and intense, playful torture. Russian fairy tales adopt motifs from the German ones, but often retell them quite differently, rooted in local traditions and customs, because the dreams of different peoples are different.

While in German fairy tales a frog is kissed and thus becomes a prince, the Russian prince, conversely, must kiss a thousand frogs to finally find the right toad for life. And he often doesn't even want to.
