FASHION Theme: FASHION 2026
“Berlin is fashion!”, was the refrain in 1927. “Fashion designers” were stars, and couture houses captivated the public with visionary designs. The press wrote that their names were “spoken of so popularly that one might think they were not fashion houses, but film stars or stage favourites”.

After 30 January 1933, nothing was the same as before. Admired designers were now regarded as pariahs. The National Socialists persecuted them as Jews, homosexuals and democrats, stripping them of their civil rights, their businesses and their lives. A loss whose effects are still felt today. The stories of Joe Strassner, Erna Becker, Clara Boehm, Recha Hirschfeld and Richard Goetz exemplify the destruction of Berlin’s fashion world, bearing witness to moving personal histories, brutal persecution and, ultimately, new successes in exile.
