Heading Toward Authoritarianism? – U.S. Democracy Under Strain

Donald Trump’s return to the White House has once again exacerbated the political situation in the United States. Questions about the future of American democracy, the rule of law, the separation of powers, media freedom, and international responsibility are being raised with renewed urgency.

At the same time, the global landscape is shifting: trade conflicts, security tensions, social polarization, and the growing influence of technological and religiously conservative power centers are shaping the political dynamics in the U.S.—with direct implications for Europe and Germany.

On June 4, 2026, the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) will revive a proven format with “What’s Up America” and turn its attention to current political, social, and international developments in the U.S.

The series kicks off with the event: “On the Path to Authoritarianism? – America’s Democracy Under Stress

The focus is on the state of the separation of powers, the rule of law, and democratic norms under Donald Trump’s second presidency. Topics for discussion include the role of the judiciary, media independence, the protection of democratic institutions, as well as issues related to elections, participation, and political polarization.
