Café Finito – where mourners and lovers, seriousness and wit meet. An ode to the power of human community.
In Berlin's Dorotheenstadt Cemetery, among the graves of some of Germany's most talented deceased, stood Café Finito – a place of solace, encounter, and stories.
For a year, a group of mourners gathers among the graves of Brecht, Hegel, and Herrndorf: Iris, the writer, has lost her mother; Matthias, the insurance broker, his lover; Lizzie, after seventy years, her husband; and Mira, the young doctor, her best friend. Together, they learn to remember, and some find the courage to embark on something new. A lemur and a special mulberry tree also play a role, and one night, the living and the dead celebrate a magnificent feast. With subtle humor, empathy, and surprising lightness, Sybil Volks tells the story of how strangers become a community – a novel about grief and solace that celebrates life.
Sybil Volks lives as a writer in Emden and Berlin. She has published five novels as well as short stories and poems. Her historical Berlin crime novel, "Café Größenwahn" (Café Megalomania), was nominated for the Glauser Prize for best crime debut. Her novel "Torstraße 1" (Gate Street 1), which was adapted into a film, tells the story of a building in the center of Berlin that becomes a mirror of its time over eight decades. The bestseller "Winter Guests" brings together three generations in a snowbound island house, while in "The Lucky Travelers," Comet Fortune throws the islanders' lives into disarray. In the new novel "Café Finito," the famous Dorotheenstadt Cemetery becomes a place of solace, encounters, and stories.
