A 38th-generation rabbi questions his Orthodox heritage, becomes a drag queen, and founds an inclusive, rebellious religious community.
- Panel discussion in English with Dani Kranz and Sandi DuBowski et al.
The documentary “Sabbath Queen” follows the life of Rabbi Amichai over a period of 21 years—heir to a 38-generation-old rabbinical family, including several Chief Rabbis of Israel. Torn between tradition and rebellion, he becomes a drag queen, a queer father, and founds Lab/Shul in New York, an inclusive, interfaith community.
“Sabbath Queen” depicts his quest to reimagine religion and rituals—one that challenges patriarchy, celebrates interfaith love, and advocates for peace, a ceasefire, and an end to the occupation—with great warmth and without a false resolution.
A provocative, yet loving and unique documentary about faith, identity, and Jewish survival in the changing 21st century.
Following the screening, Dani Kranz, a German-Jewish anthropologist and expert on contemporary Jewish life, will speak with director Sandi DuBowski and others.
In cooperation with Urania Berlin and the Stiftung Neue Synagoge – Centrum Judaicum.
