Reading with Lea Streisand: “Berlinerisch - WATT DENN, ICKE?”

The author Lea Streisand was born in the GDR and grew up in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood. She studied modern German literature and Scandinavian studies at Humboldt University.

Since 2003, she has been reading and hosting events at Berlin literary venues. She writes for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, FAZ, taz, and others, and is known for her audio column “War schön jewesen” on Radio Eins (RBB).

The result is a small, beautifully designed, entertaining “cultural history of the Berlin dialect” filled with astonishing facts. The author takes readers on a linguistic journey of discovery with wit and humor.

She explains why Berlin actually has nothing to do with bears, why the Berlin dialect is actually called “Berlinisch,” and why the Beatles speak with a Berlin accent in the movie.
