In both emerging coming-of-age novels, the provinces form the space in which the characters must emancipate themselves. Alternating between readings and discussion, Christoph Hein and Markus Podehl will explore the extent to which the provinces, in all their contradictions, shape literary language and how class, desire, and identity are negotiated in both texts.
