Event series "Writing History(ies): The Second World War in Literature and Science"
In his novel "Tango in Chernivtsi," Oleg Serebrian focuses on the Ukrainian-Romanian border region of northern Bukovina, a region characterized by cultural diversity, shifting national affiliations, and profound political upheavals.
Annexed by the Soviet Union as a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact, it was once again under Romanian control during the war, incorporated into the Ukrainian Soviet Republic in 1944, and is now a Ukrainian city.
Based on the novel, participants in this event can discuss the multiplicity of voices in border regions: the coexistence of different experiences, loss and belonging, and how literature makes complex historical spaces accessible beyond clear-cut national narratives.
With:
Oleg Serebrian, author of "Tango in Chernivtsi" and Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Ankara
Prof. Dr. Jana Osterkamp, Director of the Bukovina Institute at the University of Augsburg
Moderator: Christoph Meißner, Research Associate at the Berlin-Karlshorst Museum
An event in cooperation with the Center for East European and International Studies (ZOiS)
