An evening of original compositions inspired by North African traditions, rhythms, and the culture of the Mediterranean region, engaging in a dialogue with contemporary composition and improvisation.

Led by oud player and composer Sufian Ararah, the trio draws on the musical traditions of North Africa and the Mediterranean region.

Ararah, who grew up in Tripoli and was strongly influenced by the Libyan Maluf tradition, incorporates years of study, travel, and artistic collaboration throughout the region—from Tunisia and Sicily to Istanbul—into his music.

Together with Walid Bahri (electric bass) and Cherif Hammiche (percussion), the trio develops a distinctive sound rooted in maqam, rhythmic traditions, and improvisation, while also incorporating influences from contemporary jazz and global musical trends. Their original compositions explore memory, identity, and place, seeking new ways to connect cultural heritage with contemporary musical expression.

Later in the evening, the trio will be joined by pianist and composer Andreas F. Staffel. Together they will present Asdaa (“Echoes”) as well as other original works from their ongoing collaboration.
