Symposium of the Society for Artistic Research (gkfd)

Now that Berlin’s Artistic Research program has fallen victim to budget cuts in the cultural sector after six years of funding from the Berlin Senate—on the grounds that it falls under the purview of the Department of Science—the Symposion asks where artistic research belongs.

Does it even have a traditional home, or is it not rather situated within various practices of research and learning, of exhibiting, performing, or publishing?

It takes place in various contexts, repeatedly breaks away from the fields assigned to it, and creates its own interstices of meaning.

As with Christa Wolf, whose title is borrowed here, this self-uprooting may hold its potential—which, in the literal sense of the word, could be called “utopian.”

With contributions by Bakri Bakhit, Peggy Buth, Iris Dressler, Anke Dyes, Filipa César, Johan Grimonprez, Volker Lösch, Fabian Saul, Katharina Schlieben, and Konstanze Schmitt.
