Civil War and Revolution in Spain, 1936–1939 | Film Series Marking the 90th Anniversary

At BrotfabrikKINO, July is entirely dedicated to a film series marking the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War and Revolution. Three weeks, 23 films, 10 special events, plus an exhibition.

On July 18, 90 years ago, Franco addressed the army via radio broadcast, thereby giving the go-ahead for the generals’ coup against the Republic. One day later, large segments of the working class responded with a social revolution.

The historical significance of the Spanish Civil War and the accompanying revolution is also evident in the multitude of films that explore it. Moreover, the opposing sides, conflicts, and various perspectives on the war are reflected in these films.

The BrotfabrikKINO is screening a selection of these films. The lineup includes “classics” such as Ken Loach’s *Land and Freedom*, Hans-Magnus Enzensberger’s film about the legendary Buenaventura Durruti, and the early work of Oscar-winning director Pepe Danquart—*Die lange Hoffnung* (The Long Hope). But the program also includes rarely seen films such as “Solange du lebst” by Harald Reinl and “Madrid” by Basilio Martín Patino, as well as historical productions from the Civil War era. In addition, there will be a premiere of “Außen abgekühlt doch voller Glut im Innern” by Dieter Nelles and Volker Hoffmann, and Vicente Aranda’s “Libertarias” will be shown with German subtitles for the first time.

Filmmakers, eyewitnesses, and experts will be in attendance at a number of screenings.

Accompanying the screenings, parts of the exhibition “Tragedy of Freedom—Revolution and War in Spain 1936–39. Fragments” will be on display.
