“Have you ever sawed a hole? So? Was it gone afterward?” Florschütz & Döhnert set out to uncover the mystery of holes. And they make holes. Surprisingly, the more holes they make, the greater the possibilities that open up—like a door leading somewhere else.

A magical play that playfully explores optical illusions while sharpening the senses.

Ever since Melanie Florschütz and Michael Döhnert set out to develop their own theatrical language for young theater audiences, the Schaubude Berlin has supported them.

The production “A Hole Is Usually Round” is poetic theater—almost without words, featuring plenty of sound and music. The production was revised in 2025 and expanded to include artistically integrated audio description.

To achieve this, the two artists collaborated with students and educators from the Marie-und-Hermann-Schmidt-Schule, the Brandenburg School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and blista, the nationwide center of excellence for people who are blind or visually impaired.
