With Birgit Heitfeld on her novel Valdiviana

Brandenburg, 1850: A pharmacist and politician sets off for Chile.

After democracy had been on the rise in Germany but ultimately failed, Heinrich Quandter finds himself increasingly subjected to harassment by reactionary forces. He meets the colonization agent Felix Wildermuth—and his journey toward a new life begins.

Author Birgit Heitfeld reads from her novel “Valdiviana, or Where the Devil Lost His Poncho.” In a discussion with Johann Gerlieb (Research Associate, forum 1848), bridges are built between historical fiction and actual historiography.

What true events lie behind the narrative and the character of Heinrich Quandter? And where does historical fiction reach its limits?

In an authentic setting and with musical accompaniment by Philip Andronic’s jazz trio, the audience is invited to be transported back to Berlin and Chile in the mid-19th century.
