As part of a week-long program at KW, the Grounded Outer Space People—both a music ensemble and a residency program—open their collaborative practice to the public every evening.
Developed by artist and musician Anton Kats (b. 1983, Kherson), the group evolves with each edition through newly invited performers—in this edition, Hiromu Seifert, Natalie Greffel, and Nima Séne. This constantly shifting formation is central to the exploration of transmigration and sound. Over the course of the residency, improvisation and collective listening give rise to sonic, textual, and visual concepts shaped by the contexts and references that each artist brings to the table.
“Grounded Outer Space People” is interdisciplinary and open-ended, drawing on Kats’ multifaceted practice spanning music, radio, installation, and publication. The project builds on Kats’ concept of “sonic antifascism” as well as Ukrainian Cosmism, engaging with its imaginative and planetary conception of sound. Inspired, among other things, by Hiwa K’s *Chicago Boys: While We Were Singing, They Were Dreaming* and the artist and philosopher Fedir Tetyanych (1942–2007), the ensemble conceives of music as a practice of interweaving bodies, stories, and geographies.
