Guided tour for the Open Monument Day 2026
For Open Monument Day in Berlin, the Berlin Wall Memorial is offering an exclusive guided tour on the history of the escape tunnel on Schönholzer Straße.
In 2023, a 13-meter-long section of an escape tunnel was uncovered during construction work. It had been dug in the spring of 1970 from west to east—from 80 Bernauer Street to 22 Schönholzer Street. The goal was to enable family members to escape. However, the plan failed shortly before completion when the Stasi discovered and destroyed the tunnel following a betrayal.
During the tour, you’ll learn more about the tunnel builders and their families, and how they stayed in touch despite repression.
