Das Berlin der 1960er in Uwe Johnsons „Berliner Sachen“

How did a child socialized in the USA view the absurdities of the divided city of Berlin? How did an old resident experience it? And what did a pub have to do with escape?

Writer Uwe Johnson (1934 - 1984) experienced the 1960s in Berlin as an alert and controversial contemporary witness. In his 1975 collection of essays "Berliner Sachen" (Berlin Things), he described it as a turbulent decade in Berlin history.

The Uwe Johnson Works Edition is a long-term research project of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) at the University of Rostock. Two of the editors of the historical-critical edition of "Berliner Sachen" provide an insight into the indexing, editing and publication of this new volume. They were supported by our staff in the extensive library of the Stadtmuseum Berlin.
