Drawing inspiration from Jacques Offenbach’s opera *Les Contes d’Hoffmann*, the Staatskapelle Berlin explores the soundscapes of Romanticism, fantasy, and fairy tales in Chamber Concert VIII.

The focus is on works by Robert Schumann, whose poetic imagery continued to resonate well into the 20th century. The Märchenbilder, Op. 113, combine delicate viola tones with pulsating piano, while the Abegg Variations, Op. 1, transform a simple motif into virtuosic, energetic variations.

Inspired by Schumann’s fairy-tale world, György Kurtág also composed his Hommage à R. Sch., Op. 15d, for clarinet, viola, and piano. The program concludes with a richly contrasting piece: Jean Françaix’s trio, characterized by its neoclassical style, melancholic timbres, and humorous lightness.
