To the site of the 1848 revolution in the GDR

Memories of the 1848 Revolution have always been controversial, and this has left its mark on the Cemetery of the March Martyrs, one of the central sites commemorating that revolution.

This was also true of the cemetery during the GDR era: first, a new memorial stone was erected; then, a bronze sailor stood guard over the fallen revolutionaries of 1848 and 1918; and finally, dolphins even appeared nearby in Friedrichshain Public Park.

Join us for an open-air reading tour through the Cemetery of the March Fallen. Oliver Gaida, Hanno Hochmuth, and Susanne Kitschun will read from their contributions and offer new insights into this multifaceted memorial site.

Following the reading tour, enjoy jazz music by the Philip Andronic Trio.

Panel:

  • Dr. Hanno Hochmuth, Leibniz Center for Contemporary History Research, Potsdam
  • Oliver Gaida, Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Vice Chair of the Paul Singer Association
  • Dr. Susanne Kitschun, Director of forum 1848 at the Cemetery of the March Martyrs
