Saisoneröffnung
The two works with which Kirill Petrenko opens the new season are rich in sound and lavish in style.
Beneath the luminous surface, however, lie mysterious messages. Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations not only explore a sentimental theme but also offer encrypted portraits of friends and family members.
Peter Tchaikovsky, on the other hand, infuses his Fourth Symphony with a “fate motif”—a reference to the life crises that accompanied him during its composition. While there are moments of light, they are always overshadowed by the threat of misfortune.
