Series of Discussions Widerständiges Feiern IV, curated by Fabienne Mahwane

Where can I celebrate, be together, and chat? Where can I recharge to return to everyday life the next day, to shape my life? For which evening do I dress up, where do I show myself off and celebrate others for their outfits? Where can I let go and simply be?

For some, celebrating means dancing the night away in a club, for others a cozy dinner with friends, and for still others, reading a book or watching a series alone on the couch. Spaces for rest and joy are especially important for marginalized people to find the necessary energy to survive in a discriminatory world. At the same time, it can be particularly difficult for them to find these spaces.

Due to audism and a widespread lack of sign language skills among hearing people, participation for deaf people is still very limited. This is especially true for deaf people who also experience racial discrimination. The lives and (celebratory) culture of deaf BIPoC people are still largely overlooked at large community events and, if they are, are only addressed peripherally.

In this panel, deaf activists and artists with lived experience of racism—Arun Mariavilasm, Dodzi Dougban, and Halenur Sözen—will discuss how they define celebration, rest, and joy for themselves and their community, and what political and resistant potential celebration holds from their perspectives. The question is: what alliances and expanded spaces are needed for this celebration to truly be a shared experience for everyone?

The evening will be moderated by Meyad Sarsour Ndaye.

The discussion series "Resilient Celebration," which explores the political and resistant dimensions of celebration, was conceived by Fabienne Mahwane, a fully qualified lawyer, moderator, and speaker, specifically for the Black Berlin Black – Festivity festival.
