An Exhibition by the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior

The Salonga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of Earth’s last remaining natural paradises. Here, research teams from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior study wild bonobos to understand their unusual social lives.

As part of the LuiKotale Bonobo Project, award-winning nature photographer Christian Ziegler has captured intimate portraits of these wild animals, revealing their unique personalities up close.

Today, behavioural biology also uses digital methods to collect long-term data on great apes and track the migratory movements of various animal species across vast landscapes.   This exhibition offers a window into this important research, which aims to help protect the rapidly dwindling habitats of wildlife around the world.
