Ghanili: An Homage to Umm Kulthum
The Arabic term ghanili may be translated as “sing for me”—and it is also the title of one of the best-known songs by Umm Kulthum, the legendary singer who embodies the “Golden Age” of Arabic music in the mid-20th century. Waed Bouhassoun, a Pierre Boulez Saal regular who has performed here with collaborators from many different traditions, returns to her musical roots with this program.
Joined by her ensemble, she presents songs made famous by Umm Kulthum, Asmahan, and others, combining them with musical settings of classic muwashshah poetry from her native Syria.
