Jewish life in the heart of Berlin before the Nazi dictatorship

The New Synagogue Berlin Foundation – Centrum Judaicum, in collaboration with the Mitte Museum, is realizing a new memorial project on the Jewish history of the Spandau suburb.

Ten permanent street markers will be installed in the Scheunenviertel (Barn Quarter) – including on Gormannstraße, Rosenthaler Straße, and Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. The street names appear in Yiddish script, supplemented by explanations and QR codes.

Visitors can access the interactive website www.jewishmitteberlin.de via the QR codes. A digital map highlights approximately 40 Jewish sites, institutions, biographies, and historical events, such as the Scheunenviertel pogrom of 1923. A glossary complements the site.

Thematic tours, narrated by Mascha Kaléko, Alexander Granach, and Regina Jonas, guide visitors through the quarter. The project thus connects a physical and a digital landscape of remembrance.

Especially in a neighborhood where there are currently few Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) and hardly any visible memorials, the project creates new points of reference within the urban space. Aimed at a broad, bilingual audience, this event invites participants to rediscover the Jewish-migrant history of a neighborhood often perceived today as lacking historical context.
