A dialogic reading from Susan Sontag’s library. With Anna-Lisa Dieter and Kristina Jaspers
In one of her famous lists, Susan Sontag sets herself the task: “Read a book every day.” She evidently did just that. Her private library, now housed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), comprises some 20,000 volumes—including numerous annotated copies.

Susan Sontag was a voracious reader who meticulously worked her way through her books. In this event, the two renowned Sontag experts Anna-Lisa Dieter and Kristina Jaspers will map out an intellectual topography of Susan Sontag. Drawing on her “traces of reading”—previously unpublished annotations in the books she studied intensively—they offer new insights into Sontag’s ways of thinking and reading.
Kristina Jaspers is a curator at the Deutsche Kinemathek—Museum for Film and Television in Berlin; she has conducted research in Susan Sontag’s estate at UCLA and curated the exhibition “Susan Sontag—Seeing and Being Seen” for the Bundeskunsthalle and the Schwule Museum.
Anna-Lisa Dieter is a curator at the Humboldt-Labor; she conceived the exhibition on Susan Sontag, “Everything Matters,” for the Literaturhaus München and published the book “Susan Sontag: 100 Pages.”
