This tour through all the exhibition rooms explores the concept of nature through selected objects spanning 800 years of German history: from the World Egg and the wolf to visual depictions of destroyed landscapes from the 20th century.

How have the shifting relationships between societies and their conceptions of nature shaped faith, life, and politics over the centuries?

The visionary and Benedictine nun Hildegard von Bingen, for example, saw in nature a divine force, the “viriditas.” In the early modern period, societies began to make extensive use of natural resources and brought about lasting changes to the environment. How governments, political, or religious movements define nature, how they treat it, and what ideas they associate with it is subject to constant change.

This tour offers diverse insights into events and developments that have altered or shaped the concept of nature.
