What Can (and Can't) Sources Tell Us? – How We Research and Educate About Nazi-Looted Art Today.
The opening session of the lecture series will focus on the fundamentals and current state of research in provenance studies. In her keynote address, Dr. Meike Hopp (German Center for Lost Cultural Property) will discuss the possibilities and limitations of working with historical sources in provenance studies.

- How can we reconstruct the paths of artworks that were confiscated during the Nazi era?
- What opportunities do historical sources offer—and where do researchers encounter limitations?
Artists Adi Liraz and Lea Petermann will then present their work: what role does provenance research play in their artistic practice of remembrance? What stories do they want to tell? Afterward, the three speakers will engage in a discussion about provenance research and public outreach.
Art, Looting, and Restitution—Forgotten Life Stories is a project of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Dresden State Art Collections in cooperation with the German Center for Lost Cultural Property. It is funded as part of the federal program “Demokratie leben!” by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth, as well as by the Friede Springer Foundation.
