Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Rafael Payare, Steven Banks
Two compositions, one powerful message: music as an expression of resistance, humanity, and triumph. Billy Childs' concerto Diaspora, impressively played by saxophonist Steven Banks, is inspired by Ravel and Barber and unfolds a moving musical narrative of African-American history.
Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 confronts the horrors of war with impressive force – the striking march theme in the first movement, in particular, combines an unshakable will to fight with hope. A monumental work that still impresses today as a passionate, anti-fascist statement.
