*La Traviata* as an immersive opera experience
Opéra Privé conceives of opera not as a traditional stage setting, but as an immediate encounter.
The boundaries between stage and audience dissolve; the singers move amongst the guests, whilst music, voices and emotions fill the space. At the heart of the event is Verdi’s *La Traviata* and, with it, the story of Violetta and Alfredo – a tale of love and longing, freedom and societal expectations.
Hans Werner Meyer guides the audience through the evening. The actor bridges the gap between Verdi’s 19th-century world and our present day, offering a personal, contemporary perspective on the work and its characters. Under the creative direction of Petra Luisa Meyer, founder of 140.5 Karat, the venue, lighting, singing and cuisine come together to create a holistic experience.
Verdi is also brought into the present day through the cuisine. Head chef Gerrit Wensing draws inspiration from the composer’s preferences and the down-to-earth cuisine of his homeland. Stuffed pasta pockets draw on the tradition of filled pasta, whilst the braised beef shoulder serves as a modern interpretation of Verdi’s well-known fondness for slow-cooked shoulder; at the same time, porcini mushrooms, buckwheat and wild broccoli translate the rural character into a regional, contemporary cuisine. To round off the meal, almond cake with blueberries, basil and bergamot adds a light, Italian-inspired touch.
