NoonSong: Jubilation and Wonders - Music from a Distant Time

The choral music in this NoonSong is sublime and stirring. In particular, the composition by Desprez, the “Master of Polyphony,” which is over 500 years old, movingly expresses the miraculous power of God.

This motet is one of Josquin’s few works that is more chordal than polyphonic, giving it a more hymnal character. The rich, deep register of the voices creates a direct, human, and powerful effect. As was often the case in the Renaissance, sacred and secular texts are interwoven in this famous work.

Liturgy: 3rd Sunday after Trinity

  • Preces: Thomas Tomkins (1572–1656): Preces & Responses
  • Psalm of the Day: Psalm 100 Orlando di Lasso (c. 1532–1594): Jubilate Deo
  • Weekly Psalm: Psalm 103 William Child (1606–1697): Praise the Lord, O my soul
  • Canticum: Desprez Josquin (ca. 1440–1521): Tu solus qui facis mirabilia
