Democracy History Day

All neighbours of the Berlin Wall Memorial are cordially invited to share their personal memories and stories about the Berlin Wall over coffee, tea and cake.

Together, we will look at the photo album of Bernauer Strasse: on 13 August 1961, a normal residential street became a divided neighbourhood. Houses were demolished, families separated and, little by little, a wide border strip was erected.

The Wall thus changed people's everyday lives and livelihoods forever.

Perhaps you lived in Wedding and walked along Bernauer Strasse every day? Or did you attend the Ernst Reuter School? Or did you live in East Berlin with a view of the border strip? What memories do you and your families have of the divided city, the fall of the Wall and the years that followed?

We will discuss this together. Just drop by our storytelling café in the visitor centre of the Berlin Wall Memorial. You are also welcome to bring your own photos.
