Ma (間, [ma], noun) is a fundamental Japanese concept that refers to the pause or empty space between things, where life takes a breath and beauty is born. It teaches us that silence, stillness, and pause are not an absence but presence in its purest form.

The three contemporary dance performances this evening, featuring dancers and choreographers from Japan, Italy, Spain, and the USA, explore this very idea through their profound movements and invite the audience—in the truest sense of the word—to be part of the experience. The artists look forward to welcoming you to the world premiere of this program.

The three pieces are:

"Mono no Aware"

Choreography: Aya Misaki

Dance: Aya Misaki, Ayano Tatekawa, Ain Tominaga, Rakuho Murayabashi

"Thrice - extract"

Choreography | Dance: Veronica Parlagreco

Music Design: Federico Pipia

"Doom Suture"

Choreography: Noa am Ende

Dance: Drella Silverman, Phoebe McDowell, Jazlyn Goldsworthy, Leonor Campillo

Ma is also the name of a Berlin-based dance collective founded by Ayano Tatekawa, Ain Tominaga, and Rakuho Murabayashi, dedicated to exploring interstitial spaces through dance and collaboration. By bringing together artists from diverse cultural and stylistic backgrounds, the collective creates a space where differences are not erased but held, negotiated, and transformed into new forms of connection.
