How can cellulose be turned into a fibre that conducts light? And what potential do renewable raw materials hold for future technologies?


In her talk, Heidi Englberger from the Technical University of Munich will present the latest research on cellulose-based optical fibres. The focus is on a new, solvent-free manufacturing process that can be used to produce sustainable polymer fibres for light transmission from cellulose derivatives.


Whilst conventional optical polymer fibres are usually based on fossil-based plastics, cellulose offers a renewable alternative. The fibres presented demonstrate stable light transmission in the visible and near-infrared spectrum and could therefore be of particular interest for short-distance applications.


The talk provides fascinating insights into the connection between cellulose, materials research and sustainable technology, and demonstrates how a natural raw material can be transformed into an innovative material for the future.
