In his farewell season as General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Donald Runnicles returns to the Philharmonie Berlin with the opera's chorus and orchestra, as well as the Berlin Radio Choir.
The program features Arnold Schoenberg's monumental "Gurre-Lieder" – a work that marks the culmination of his early, late-Romantic oeuvre, combining influences from Mahler, Wagner, and Strauss. It is based on the poem by Danish author Jan Peter Jacobsen, which tells the tragic love story of King Waldemar and his lover Tove, who meets a fatal end due to the queen's jealousy.
The Deutsche Oper is responsible for the five solo parts with singers from its own ensemble, including tenor David Butt Philip as "Waldemar." Jeremy Bines is in charge of rehearsing the chorus.
