Excerpts from works by Manuel Penella, Moreno Torroba, F. A. Barbieri, Pablo Luna and others.
The zarzuela – the Spanish musical theater named after the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid – emerged in the 17th century as an independent form alongside Italian opera.
Like operetta, vaudeville, and farce, it captivated audiences with entertaining, effective works, hundreds of which were created in the 19th century. Although this traditional genre was long forgotten and rarely appears on repertoires today, it is receiving renewed attention.
Star director Christof Loy, a passionate advocate of the zarzuela, is dedicating a special evening to it at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
