What is girlhood? What is femininity? What hopes and dreams do we have, and what does reality look like? And how do we deal with the concept of gender when we don’t feel we belong to the one assigned to us at birth?

GIRLHOOD is a musical concert, created and performed by Elijah Nielebock (they/them) and Jona Arava (she/her). The two non-binary artists met in the independent musical theater scene, and the idea for GIRLHOOD quickly formed. The more Jona and Elijah got to know the genre, the more they noticed that in many musicals, trans* stories are told in a way that feels inauthentic or unrealistic. They drew inspiration from a wide variety of musicals and wove solos, duets, and group numbers into the context of their own story, always keeping the aspect of self-empowerment in mind.

Now they’re taking the stage together with a fascinating concert that musically portrays the experiences of a trans* person—from childhood to adulthood, from coming out to dating, from family to career. The artists are accompanied on piano by Joseph Pierce (they/them) for some songs.

  • Duration: approx. 2 hours, with intermission
