A Tour of Wedding with Arne Krasting
On our walk, we’ll step back into the world of the 1920s. We’ll follow the traces of “Bloody May,” commemorate the political struggles of that era, and at the same time take a look at people’s lives amid tenement housing, factories, entertainment, and a spirit of new beginnings.
To this day, Wedding boasts an astonishing number of remnants from this era: a tram depot, a substation, a brewery, and even a former safe factory all speak to the dynamism of a modern metropolis. Historian Arne Krasting explains the stories hidden behind these facades.
We’ll also encounter architectural treasures from various eras: the remains of the once-popular Marienbad, the monumental courthouse on Brunnenplatz, and impressive Art Nouveau buildings on Badstraße. Even the creators of *Babylon Berlin* found inspiration here and used Wedding as the backdrop for the Jewish-influenced Scheunenviertel of the 1920s.
To wrap up the tour, a special place awaits us: hidden in an unassuming side street lies a historic ballroom whose exterior gives little hint of the stories hidden behind its walls. We’ll conclude the tour with a glass of sparkling wine and learn more about the eventful history of this building, which was only awakened from its slumber a few years ago.
