Guided tour

Ellen Auerbach (1906–2004) is considered one of the most important avant-garde photographers of the first half of the 20th century.

Together with Grete Stern (1904–1999), she developed new forms of portrait and advertising photography. In 1933, she emigrated to Tel Aviv and lived in the United States from 1937 onward. Photography expeditions took her to Central and South America and to Europe. Later, Ellen Auerbach also worked as a learning therapist.

To mark the 120th anniversary of Ellen Auerbach’s birth, the Library of the Academy of Arts is presenting selected items from her estate library, which has remained largely unknown until now. Visitors can discover, above all, art books, signed copies, and other rarities from her library.

Ellen Auerbach Fellowship

The Ellen Auerbach Fellowship of the Academy of Arts is a grant in the field of international photography; it was first awarded in 2006 on the occasion of the artist’s 100th birthday and is funded by her estate.
